GENTLE TEACHING AND OTHER BEHAVIOURAL APPROACHES PROVIDE POSITIVE RESULTS FOR PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES AND CHALLENGING BEHAVIOURS Pegasus Holistics is committed to the objectives set out in the government white paper “Valuing People” (A New Strategy for Learning Disability for the 21st Century) The term valuing people confirms the ethos of Gentle Teaching. In caring for people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour(s), caregivers are expected to be multi-skilled. Any carer who has joined a team of staff to work with people with learning disabilities has acquired some skills, if not all, to achieve their objectives. Staff who work with people with Learning Disabilities may be expected to make difficult decisions when providing the needs of service users present challenging behaviour(s) including avoidance of activities of daily living. Pegasus has been successful in supporting caregivers and parents to bring positive changes in the lives of people with Learning Disabilities. Our experiences include service users who have moderate to severe learning disabilities, autism, challenging behaviours including avoidance of participating in day-to-day activities of daily living and super-imposed mental health issues. The role of Pegasus is to provide development programmes to enable caregivers to acquire skills in assessments and strategies: To provide service in natural settings To use teaching and learning opportunities available in the community life To engage service users in meaningful activities To empower people with learning disabilities so that they can meet their own needs to their fullest potential. Pegasus strongly believes that in providing services for people with learning disabilities, the following principles must be maintained: Every person - has Value should be treated with Dignity and Respect is capable of Growth and Learning through community experience should Experience Life in the most natural settings has the Right to be the primary decision maker in his or her life and carries the responsibility for the direction it takes.

SOME OF OUR SUCCESS STORIES A service user’s compulsion of taking other people’s food was successfully replaced by appropriate behaviour, using Analogue Assessment (observations of how individuals respond to environmental conditions. A service user who had severe learning disability and engaged in self-stimulatory behaviour such as prolonged pacing up and down, rocking to and fro etc. was successfully reduced by teaching her to bake Jam Tarts using Positive Programming with Task Analysis and Gentle Teaching. A service user with autism who had a relapse of her difficult behaviour and refused to return to her day care service. She protested violently to getting on the bus to the day centre. She happily returned to the centre by the bus using Behavioural Technique, Gentle Teaching and TEACCH System approach. A service user with moderate learning disability refused to get up from bed to engage in activities of daily living. This was as a result of a relapse of depressive illness. Pegasus successfully used Gentle Teaching approaches to motivate the individual to regain his interest in activities of daily living.
